Canada Games 2023 Team NL

The 2023 Canada Winter Games will be held next February 18 to March 5 in Prince Edward Island. Table Tennis is an official sport that will take place during the first week of the games.  Competition will from February 19 - 24 involving provincial teams of 2 male and 2 female athletes. Below are short biographies of the Team NL Table Tennis team.

Jeremy Lehr will be serving as Head Coach for Team NL's table tennis team at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in PEI this February. He is 24 years old from St. John’s and currently completing a bachelor's of intermediate/secondary education at MUN and hopes to become a high school physical education teacher in the future. Although relatively new to coaching table tennis, he has plenty of coaching experience in basketball over the past few years. Jeremy has played competitive table tennis since the age of 10 and has gathered many provincial and Atlantic titles in his career. He went to the 2015 Canada Winter Games as an athlete for Team NL's table tennis team and looks to bring his abilities to the coaching staff this time around.

Jenna Connolly will be serving as the Manager for NL's table tennis team at the 2023 Canada Winter Games held in PEI. She is currently completing a bachelor's degree in education at Memorial University with a focus on physical education. Jenna is new to table tennis but has experience at Canada Games. She competed as an athlete at the 2017 Canada Summer Games held in Winnipeg for Female Softball. In addition, she also attended the 2022 Canada Summer Games as the Head Coach of NL’s Female Softball Team. She looks to use her Canada Games experience and physical education knowledge to achieve a positive Canada Games experience for the coaching staff and athletes.

Divine Aseo

Divine is a 16-year-old Filipino who started playing at the age of 4.  Recently she participated in the 2022 Atlantic Table Tennis Championship representing Team NL, bringing home 2 golds, one for Women's Doubles and the other in Girls Under 19 Doubles.  Currently she is a grade 11 student and intends to study Criminology and Business at Memorial University of Newfoundland in the next two years. 

Ciela Libid

Ciela is an 18-year old Filipino who has been playing since the age of 3. She also participated in the 2022 Atlantic Table Tennis Championship representing Team NL, bringing home 2 golds, one for Women's Doubles and the other in Girls Under 19 Doubles. A recent graduate of Gander Collegiate and plans to pursue nursing at MUN in the next year. 

Carter Walters

Carter is 17 years old from Triton, NL and is currently a Level III student at Dorset Collegiate.  Carter has been a member of 4 consecutive SSNL Provincial Championship teams, winning medals in both singles and doubles events, and has also represented Team Central at the 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.

Peter Quinlan

Peter Quinlan is a grade 11 student at Roncalli Central High School in Avondale. Peter has been playing table tennis since grade 7 and trains with the Paradise and Carbonear Table Tennis Clubs. Among his achievements, in 2021 Peter represented his high school at SSNL Provincials coming in first place in Boys Singles. In 2022 Peter played with the PEI Team at the Atlantic’s, coming first place in the team event and recently finished first in Juniors at the inaugural Avalon Mall Invitational Table Tennis Tournament.

Madison Clarke - Female Alternate

Madison from Bloomfield, is 18 years old  and is a first year nursing student at Memorial University.  Madison has participated in three SSNL table tennis provincials, receiving medals in individual and team events; Newfoundland Winter Games, earning a team silver; three Atlantic Table Tennis Championship tournaments, winning team gold and silver, silver in under 15 and under 18 girls doubles and gold in under 18 mixed doubles

Gavin Parsons - Male Alternate

Gavin Parsons, a 17 year old from Gambo,  is a level III student at Smallwood Academy and plans to attend the University of New Brunswick next fall for Business Administration. Along with table tennis he has played numerous sports. In the short time he has been playing table tennis’ he has been a part of two SSNL Table Tennis provincials representing his school winning medals in both singles and doubles events

2023 PEI Canada Games Recap

The Table Tennis Competition took place during the first week, February 18- February 25, of the Canada Games with Table Tennis Team NL consisted of four athletes, Divine Aseo, Ciela Libid(two females) and  Peter Quinlan, Carter Walters(two males) and they were Coached by Jeremy Lehr  and Jenna Connolly was the Manager.


Results Recap

The first event was Mixed Doubles which had Aseo and Quinlan pairing together while Libid  and Walters joined forces.  The Libid/Walters duo finished 11th while Aseo/Quinlan ended up 13th in the 23 team field.


The next events consisted of Female and Male Doubles.  The female tandem of Aseo and Libid had a strong performance with a 6th place finish while the Male Doubles pair of Quinlan and Walters  had a excellent outing and finished 5th overall in Males Doubles.

Up next on the agenda was the Team Competition event.   In the Female Team portion the Aseo/Libid pair had a 6th place finish and in the Male Team event, the Quinlan/Walters duo finished 8th overall.

The final events of the week long tournament was Singles. In Female Singles Divine Aseo finished 11th while Ciela Libid finished 13th.  In Males Singles Quinlan ended up in the 15th position while Walters finished 19th.


Overall the team had an excellent tournament .
