How is everyone? Hope that you had a good summer and had a chance to enjoy the weather. Last season saw a jam packed schedule of events and tournaments including the NL Winter Games which resulted in a welcomed increase in Junior players participating in various Clubs and NLTTA Tournaments. As we are almost halfway in the cycle for the 2027 Canada Games no doubt junior participation will be strong this year as players seeking to make the team start to prepare.
Summer Training
While many of us relaxed the summer some players and coaches did not take much time off this summer as there was a beehive activity within the province and outside the province as well.
In early June, young table tennis players in Hopedale, Labrador got in on the action as Jeremy Lehr, Nick Hiscock and David Milley visited Hopedale and held six days of training for local table tennis players. This was a wonderful table tennis experience for athletes as they had an opportunity to learn from the three visiting coaches with their wealth of experience and knowledge.
With the increased number of Junior players this past season and the 2027 Canada Games fast approaching Jeremy Lehr, the NL Junior Coach, held free training sessions during June, July and August. These sessions lasting 3-4 hours, led by Jeremy and assistant coach Divine Aseo targeted Canada Games 2027 eligible athletes and worked on footwork, focus, fitness, strokes and match play tactics. Much improvement was seen over the summer months to these dedicated athletes and will surely benefit them moving into the 2024-25 season. Thursday evening sessions were also offered which consisted of a two hour elite training pod of juniors. Although Jeremy will be moving to the west coast for a teaching position during the 2024-25 season, Divine Aseo, Jiaqi Mu and Peter Quinlan Jr. will be taking the lead on coaching the junior sessions this upcoming season. Monday, Thursday and Saturday sessions will be happening in the metro area during the fall. Please reach out if you are a Junior and would like to be enrolled or just would like more information.
In late July, three of the provinces rising table tennis athletes attended a female table tennis training camp offered by Table Tennis Canada. Divine Aseo, Courtney Aseo and Tamarah Eyada travelled to Quebec to participate in the four day long training camp. To read more on the four day camp please see the blog item Dog Days Of Summer.
